No LeSean McCoy at voluntary workouts; Sean McDermott says Bills will earn 'the right to win'

New head coach Sean McDermott and his staff got off to a brisk start on Monday, the first day of the Buffalo Bills’ voluntary offseason conditioning program at One Bills Drive. Running back LeSean McCoy was the only player not in attendance.

Newly appointed coaches are granted extra time during spring workouts to get acquainted with players. The nearly full attendance at a voluntary workout no doubt brought a smile to McDermott’s face as he attempts to change a losing culture that has plagued organization in Buffalo for nearly two decades, explaining that the team will begin learning that winning is a “right” that is to be earned.

Some Bills players who were dogged by injuries last season are back and undoubtedly eager to get started. Center Eric Wood is recovering from a broken fibula, while wide receiver Sammy Watkins underwent a second surgery on his broken foot in January. Entering a contract year, Watkins will need to stay healthy after spending the majority of his young career banged up in some form.

There’s little doubt McDermott will also be keeping a close eye on defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, who missed half of the 2016 season. He served a four-game suspension before being sidelined for several additional weeks with a hamstring injury, fraying the nerves of a frustrated fan base that would like to see more from Buffalo’s largest (figuratively and literally) investment on the defensive line.

Monday was the first day of a new beginning for the Buffalo Bills. These offseason activities will provide a nice glimpse into the differences in how McDermott runs a program as opposed to former coach Rex Ryan.
