In my career as a guitarist, I have tried to get better at playing fast for longer periods of time. I tried alternate picking and never really got it, legato was a little better and economy picking never really clicked. Finally, what helped me with my economy picking was to come up with some hacks that allowed me to free my mind and play with fluidity. The first tip is coming up with micro exercises that help you get comfortable with string crossing.
