Why this petition matters
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
A colleague pointed out to me that Psychology Today Magazine only has photographs of Caucasians on the cover. Most of the photographs inside are also of Caucasians. I did a search back to 1992 and all of the covers had only Caucasian models. This appears to be intentional and an institutional policy. In addition, the depiction of women is of extremely thin models, which can promote eating disorders. This is counter to the ethical principles of psychologists and therapists to promote diversity and wellness in our clients. It is especially shocking given the racially charged environment that we are suffering today. I cancelled my subscription and was shocked to find a non-response from Psychology Today when told the reason. I encourage my colleagues and friends to boycott Psychology Today and to sign this Petition. You can sign this petition whether or not you are a Psychology Today subscriber or customer.
