Some Like It Hot: Summer of the Burning Sky (Montana Fire book 8) Kindle Edition
Of course. She’d expected that.
“Or it could be, Larke. I don’t have to be the guy you wanted in the bar.”
She caught her breath.
“I’m just saying that I don’t just put out fires. I can start them. And keep them going…”
She closed her eyes.
“Or I can be just a friend, if that’s what you need.”
When western Alaska erupts in a devastating fire, the elite firefighting crew of the Jude County Smokejumpers is called in to save the day. They’ll do anything to stop the fire, including fighting alongside a crew of local prisoners. The last thing they expect is a jailbreak and when the prisoners disappear into the forest with one of their own, they’ll have to fight not only the fire, but for the freedom of their friends…during the Summer of the Burning Sky
Riley McCord is trouble, from his blue eyes to his renegade smile—a cover for the grief of losing his father three years ago in Afghanistan, a loss that is still top secret. Riley masks it all by living large—working hard and playing hard, and that includes romancing Larke Kingston, local wilderness medic. When he’s sidelined while working the forest fire, he’s determined to rejoin his team, but to do so, he'll have to accompany Larke into the wilderness when she is dispatched to a medical emergency. What he doesn’t realize is that trouble is waiting for him in the woods…
Medic Larke Kingston lost the man she loved during her service in Afghanistan and she’s not interested in a troublemaker, so Riley’s no threat to her heart. Just a short-term distraction. Until, that is, a wilderness medical mission puts her face-to-face with an escaped prisoner. Suddenly she needs Riley more than she wants to admit. Riley is shocked when the escapee claims to have answers about his father’s death. However, before he can uncover them, the fire turns and is bearing down on Larke’s ranch, and his team.
Now, only Riley and Larke stand between the flames and destruction of everything they both love. But will the price of saving the ranch—and the team—be greater than they both can bear? In book 3, the epic Summer of the Burning Sky series comes to a blazing, shocking finale.

About the author

Although I attended the U of Minnesota, I’m a woodsy girl at heart. Or maybe I’m an adventurer—having lived and traveled all over the world, including Siberia, Russia as a missionary for eight years. That’s why my characters seem to get into one scrape after another—they’re too much like me! I love God, my family, my country, my church, and feel privileged every day to be able to write stories.
And my 'official' bio:

- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018The final book in the series, Summer of the Burning Sky, wrapped up the story line nicely and left me wanting to find another Susan May Warren book to read. This is such a good series. Buy or borrow it for hours of reading pleasure.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2018No one does it like Susie May Warren. Honestly, short books are not my favorite. It's tough to build true connections, to flesh out interesting stories. But this series. Three parts, each necessary and in order. So clever, so well plotted....each begins from the same place, but progresses in a different direction as it's seen through the eyes of a different couple. Each book peels back new facts about certain characters. Same situation, different dangers, new perspectives. Smart. Suspenseful. Romantic. Vintage Susie May Warren.
I've read many "beach reads" this summer....all which make me realize just how well Susie May writes. From the overarching story, to the individual sentences....beautifully arranged and articulated.... to the grain of thought that precedes it all. She's just brilliant. And funny. And deeply spiritual. I'm grateful for her and other authors like her, that both entertain and challenge me. That give me something of value to contemplate when I'm finished. That though reading is an escape for me, it can be worthwhile when all is said and done. This third installment of the series is by far the best. Just SO good. Yes, I recommend it....along with everything by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2023I read books six, seven and eight in this series. Tucker, Rio, and Riely were all great characters with very similar issues. The action was fast paced, gripping and continuous. Never a dull moment. I also enjoyed Stevie, Skye, and Larken just as much. The 23rd psalm was an inspirational touch; especially how each of the characters took something from it that spoke to each of them in a personal way.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2018When you pick up a book and can’t stop until it’s finished, you know it’s a great book.
Well, this is one of those books. Yet, not just this book, but the WHOLE series!
I like what the synopsis says at the end:
In book 3, the epic Summer of the Burning Sky series comes to a blazing, shocking finale.
Susan May Warren has done it again. She’s written a story which was so captivating from the very beginning to the last word. WOW!
This book continues the storyline of the fires in Alaska. With the smokejumpers and firefighters who worked to save the beautiful landscape, to the suspenseful actions of fighting the dangers not only from the fire but from the escaped prisoners.
The whole crew has to dig deep inside to find the strength they need, and which they can draw upon, that only comes from God.
I enjoyed how the author ended this book because it was a continuation of the other two books and nothing was left undone.
This whole series is full of sparks, action, intrigue, drama, suspense, and some sweet romance!
I highly recommend you pick up this book and whole series. You’ll never watch the news about forest fires and look at beautiful mountains the same!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2018Some Like It Hot had a few twists out of nowhere, which made it all the more interesting to see how Riley and Larke would handle and respond to their circumstances as all the excitement unfolded. It wasn’t all action, though, as this story took possibly the deepest emotional turns and had both Riley and Larke coming to terms with what it means to be a hero, the risk it takes to love, and the way God abandons everything to bring us to Him. And Riley! Talk about a fun hero — he’s such a flirt on the outside but I loved seeing the way Larke brings out his protective and heroic side, especially when her own struggles and attraction complicate everything. The series is wonderfully and nicely wrapped up with this final novella (which happens to be my favorite of the three), but I DO hope the author has more in store for this team in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2018Susan May Warren's conclusion Some Like it Hot was not what I expected. I wanted a conclusion from the first two climactic moments, and it didn't satisfy me. It was focused more on the relationship between Riley and Larke. The first two overlap a little than jumped into the climactic element with the prisoners, but from different point of views and then stretched the story a little more. In Some Like it Hot, it began the same way, but then it took a while to catch up with the prisoners, but then kept pulling away from the prisoner conflict and sticking to Riley and Larke. The ending to the series didn't wow me. It left me thirsty for me, which is so unlike Warren's writing. Even though this book didn't thrill me like she usually does, I still can't wait to return to her other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good finish
This was different.. 3 short ebooks telling the same story through different pairs of eyes. I need to now read them again. I found book 2 rather redundant but this third one was great and was a good wrap up ( although there is more story to tell). That is smart writing. If you want light, intense reading, pick up this series.
