You can extract chords from scales, but you can also extract scales from chords. In this lesson, we are going to start with a random scale, in this case, A Ionian. We are going to map the A Ionian notes all over the fretboard. Then, we will divide that fretboard into different segments or positions. One of my favorite ways to slice the fretboard is by using the three notes per string system. Typically the three notes per string system spread horizontally across the strings, but we are going to change that by repositioning a few notes. One of my favorite ways to slice the fretboard is by using the three notes per string system. Typically the three notes per string system spread horizontally across the strings, but we are going to change that by repositioning a few notes. In this way, we get a much more friendly scale for chords. Now, instead of building chords by stacking thirds we are going to use the concept of left, middle and right. That corresponds to the three notes we have per string in the scale shape we just created. We will build four-note chords by choosing one of the available notes on each string. All of the chords will be part of the A Major scale. You don't need to put names to these chords. Most of the time you will be playing these chords in a band context where the other instruments lay down the harmonic foundation. Then, you can add embellishment to the chords with the shapes we just came up with.
