MANKATO — The Vikings have yet to see running back Latavius Murray on the practice field. That could change soon.

Murray, sidelined since March 22 surgery on his right ankle, said Thursday he had two encouraging days of individual workouts earlier in the week and believes he is close to practicing for the first time with his new team. Murray has been on the physically unable to perform list since the Vikings opened training camp July 24 at Minnesota State Mankato.

“I had two really good (workouts), so things are good,” Murray said. “It is (getting close)… I did a little bit of everything, so hopefully soon.”

Murray has been working on the side during Vikings practices along with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, also on the PUP list. Murray said this week has marked the most he’s been able do in those workouts, and he’s making good progress “for sure.”

Murray, who signed a three-year, $15 million contract with the Vikings in March after four years with Oakland, didn’t want to put a precise timetable on when he could be activated.

With Murray out and Jerick McKinnon missing time in camp with a leg injury, rookie Dalvin Cook has taken the lead in the battle for the starting running back.

NEWMAN’S SECRET

With New England quarterback Tom Brady turning 40 Thursday, Vikings cornerback Terence Newman was asked after the morning walkthrough to reveal one of his secrets about playing at such an advanced age.

“I’m a hall of fame nap-taker,” said Newman, who turns 39 next month. “When I leave here, I’m going to grab some lunch and take a nap. That’s my key.”

Newman, though, has had some struggles in camp. He was beaten by Stefon Diggs on a long pass Thursday, the second time this week that has happened.

Newman also talked about Xavier Rhodes, the 6-foot-1, 218-pound cornerback who earlier this week signed a five-year, $70 million contract extension.

“(Rhodes) is probably one of the greatest talents that I’ve ever seen,” Newman said. “He’s got great size, and he can run. He’s an aggressive guy. There’s not many corners his size that can run and move like that.”

THE WRIGHT STUFF

With Laquon Treadwell out with a leg injury, Vikings receiver Jarius Wright got some practice time with the first team.

“I feel like so far I’ve put together a great training camp,” Wright said. “I’m getting better each and every day.”

Wright barely played last season, finishing with 11 receptions for 67 yards. He believes he will have an expanded role this season.

“I’m at an all-time high,” he said. “My confidence is high.”
