Bills' Zay Jones calls offense 'explosive,' praises Sammy Watkins

The Buffalo Bills’ offense is, currently, full of question marks.

Is Tyrod Taylor, who the team recently signed to a two-year contract extension, actually a franchise quarterback? Behind LeSean McCoy, do the Bills have enough depth at the running back position? Will wide receiver Sammy Watkins be fully healthy in time for the 2017 season? Even if he is, will Buffalo’s receiving corps be competitive?

The Bills’ offense, which was the league’s 16th best in 2016, looks as though it could be mediocre yet again in the 2017 season. That won’t be the case, however, if rookie wide receiver Zay Jones has any say in the matter.

Jones, who the team selected with the 37th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft, feels as though Buffalo’s offense could be elite next season. The wideout, who caught 399 passes for over 4,200 throughout his college career, recently appeared in a Facebook Live video on the team’s official Facebook page. During the stream, Jones was asked to describe the Bills’ offense in one word.

I would say ‘explosive,’ with all the weapons that we have right now, with Tyrod, Sammy, and [LeSean] Shady [McCoy] especially. Also ‘dominant,’ with our O-line and the running game that we have.

The Bills’ offense could be explosive next season. McCoy used the 2016 season to prove that he is still an elite running, rushing for over 1,200 yards on 234 attempts. When healthy, Watkins is an elite receiver, as proven by his 1,000-receiving yard outing in 2015. Even Taylor has shown flashes of brilliance at the quarterback position throughout his two seasons as a starter.

Jones could potentially serve as a catalyst for Buffalo’s offense. The former East Carolina Pirate possesses a great blend of size, speed, and catching ability, and could play opposite Watkins while becoming the reliable secondary receiving option that Taylor desperately needs.

Jones actually went on to talk about Watkins, stating that the two have formed a strong bond over the past couple of weeks.

For me, I have that close relationship [with Watkins], and I just see how humble and how nice of a man he is, just how much he cares, and the time he takes to help me and all the little details. He’s already taken me to lunch, just to hang out, it just shows what kind of man he is . . . he takes time for a young rookie just to get to know me.

Many Bills fans, as well as the team’s front office, likely hope that Watkins and Jones will be elite receivers in Buffalo for the next decade, so it’s nice to see that the two have already formed a close relationship.

The Bills’ offense has the tools necessary to be elite next season. If Jones is to be believed, Buffalo fans are in for something special in the 2017 campaign.
