The first shape corresponds to the top four strings on a major barre chord and the second shape is the minor version of the same shape. This shape corresponds to what is known as the E shape in the CAGED system. By analyzing the intervals in these shapes we can find what makes them major or minor. The reason for choosing these shapes is that all the embellishment notes (9ths, 4ths, etc.) are within easy reach inside the shapes.
