For that, we are going to use a G Dorian backing track. Remember that you can use G minor pentatonic as well. Our backing track is our established canvas and we are going to paint over it. First, we need to get the tempo right and being able to count any subdivision over that tempo. Any time I play a note, it needs to fall on any of those subdivisions. After we have established that foundation, we can take things forward by withholding the time a little bit. Drop your guitar for a moment and listen to the backing track. After we have established that foundation, we can take things forward by withholding the time a little bit. Drop your guitar for a moment and listen to the backing track. Think about how you can delay some notes intentionally, creating expectation in the audience. Take a simple lick, play all the notes in time except for the final note. Wait to deliver that final note, it doesn't even have to fall on one of the subdivisions. Try spacing more notes, play the first note on the one, but space all of the other notes out. These techniques give the impression of an elastic interpretation of time. If it gets a little too weird go back to playing strictly in time. As with every technique is important to not overdo it if we want musical results. One thing that really helps (and it's not a gimmick) is to match what you are playing with your body and face expressions. When you do that it influences your playing and the way you attack the notes. Another key aspect of this technique is the dynamics. You don't want to play all the notes at the same volume. You really have to emphasize the tone and velocity of the notes for this kind of expressive playing to take effect.
