FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has signed a two-year contract extension through 2019, and here are some of the financial details of his new deal:

Signing bonus: $5 million

Maximum value: $19.5 million

2017

Base salary: $3 million

Roster bonus: $750,000 ($46,875 per game on 46-man roster)

Workout bonus: $250,000

Incentives: $500,000

2018

Base salary: $2 million (fully guaranteed)

Workout bonus: $500,000

Roster bonus: $500,000

Incentives: $500,000

2019

Base salary: $2 million (guaranteed for injury)

Workout bonus: $500,000

Roster bonus: $500,000

Incentives: $3.5 million

This deal reflects how Edelman is happy with the Patriots and, in part, values immediate financial security more than playing out the final year of his contract in 2017 and potentially earning more on the open market in 2018.

When reporters and agents often analyze contracts, the sole focus can be on the bottom line and how the deal ranks compared to other players at the position. But that isn’t always the driving force for all players, and in Edelman’s case, one could surmise that playing for a perennial Super Bowl contender, catching passes from a future Hall of Famer and close friend in Tom Brady, being part of a stable environment, and possibly setting himself up for post-career opportunities in a region where he has a massive following were significant factors in his decision-making process.

As is always the case when a player strikes an extension one year early, the risk now shifts to the team’s side. Had the 31-year-old Edelman played out the 2017 season on his contract, the risk would have been on his side to make it through the year healthy to get to unrestricted free agency.

The Patriots, who also have receivers Brandin Cooks (2018), Chris Hogan (2018) and Malcolm Mitchell (2019) under contract for multiple seasons, now assume that risk with Edelman.
