Jonathan Stewart Contract Details Released

The Panthers will save more than $2,000,000 in cap space in 2017, and have Stewart’s services on a sweetheart deal in 2018.

The breakdown of Jonathan Stewart’s new contract was released today, and the running back stands to make a nice chunk of guaranteed money, paired with even more if he hits certain performance metrics. Stewart was due to make $8.25m in 2017. That number has now dropped to $6.175m, but is 100% fully guaranteed, a change that I do not foresee many fans disagreeing with. This money will come in the form of a large $2.5m roster bonus that is paid tomorrow, March 28th, coupled with signing and workout bonuses.

In 2018, the base value of his contract is just $3.75m dollars, and technically none of it is 100% guaranteed other than his pro-rated signing bonus of $1.1m (a $550k hit in 2018) from the previous year. He will make a cool million bucks if he is on the roster the first day of the 2018 league year, and a $1.9m salary in 2018.

But there are interesting incentives all over this deal, including the following:

  • $25,000 per regular season game on the active 46 man roster in 2017.
  • $37,5000 per regular season game on the active 46 man roster in 2018.
  • $250,000 for rushing for more than 825 yards in 2017 or 2018.
  • $350,000 for rushing for more than 900 yards in 2017 or 2018.
  • $500,000 for rushing for more than 1,000 yards in 2017 or 2018.
  • $750,000 for rushing for more than 1,100 yards in 2017 or 2018.

It should be noted that these bonuses are not additive. So, rushing for say 925 yards next year does not net him $600k, he will get $350k. Either way, it is a nice performance incentive for a player whose workload is still to be determined, and one who has had a productive career when his health is good.

Oh... and he did this once...
