HOUSTON — Justin Forsett arrived to the Broncos late last season when they were running out of players to put in the backfield. He quickly became the starter and showed he still had a little bit left in the tank.
One of Forsett’s last carries of the season was a massive 64-yard run Jan. 1 against the Raiders where he broke several tackles.
It’s possible that could be the way he goes out. Forsett, 31, is contemplating retirement this offseason after nine seasons in the NFL.
“After the Super Bowl, my wife and I are going to take a vacation. My wife is going to have a baby so we’ll take a little time off after that,” Forsett told The Denver Post on radio row Friday. “In a month or so, we’ll come up with a decision.”
Forsett said he wants to travel, write a book, spend time with his family and be a motivational speaker. He’ll soon decide whether those pursuits will begin in 2017 or wait another NFL season. Finances and location will also have an impact on his decision.
He hasn’t talked to new Broncos head coach Vance Joseph yet, but the decision will ultimately be made by Forsett.
“A lot of guys let football be their identity,” said Forsett, who had 155 rushing yards and a touchdown on 43 carries in four games with the Broncos. “I’ve never let football be my identity or who I am.”
Retirement has been a common word around the Broncos this offseason with Gary Kubiak announcing his departure from coaching last month. That hit hard for quite a few Broncos players, including Forsett who played for him in Houston, Baltimore and Denver.
“When Kubes left that was personal for me because he’s been a great friend, great mentor and coach for me throughout my career,” Forsett said. “Coach Joseph, I know him. Sky is the limit for the Broncos. He has great pieces around him.”
